“Speak up to save lives” titled high-level press conference was launched devoted to the UN Global Road Safety Week. With this regard by initiation of NRSC the seat-belt simulator was placed at the UN house for testing. UN Resident Representative Shombi Sharp, as well as the Minister of Healthcare Arsen Torosyan, the Head of the Traffic Police Yegor Karapetyan tested the device showing the vital importance of wearing seat-belts even in 30km/h speed.

Unfortunately, Armenia takes a leading place in fatality numbers in the region. The speakers raised concerning figures and issues. Particularly, as in the world, in Armenia as well the road traffic crashes are the first cause of early death in 5-29 aged people.

UN Resident Representative stressed in his speech that he is ready to argue with anyone who will say that not everyone can afford a child-seat because of financial issues: “I will then ask a single question – which is better to buy – a child-seat or a funeral box…”

All speakers agreed that road safety should be widely promoted through public awareness. The Head of the Traffic Police said that despite their numerous encouragement every day 450-600 drivers are fined for not wearing seat-belts. The statistics cites that the wearing of seat-belts and child-seats decreases the numbers of fatalities and serious injuries by 80%.

NRSC Program Manager Tatevik Hovhannisyan highlighted, that all efforts should be joined in order to reach desired results.

“For us it is vital to update the Strategy and the Action plan at a state level, the experience of which we had many years ago and we had visible results. But since 2013 Road Safety Strategy has not been updated and today the Government doesn’t’ have an Action Plan”.
